Squadron History

The Johnston County Civil Air Patrol, Charter Number NC-143, is a local unit of the North Carolina Wing Civil Air Patrol.

The Johnston County squadron first met at the Johnston County Airport in May 1989 under the command of Jesse Harrell. Later commanders included James Canady, Parker C. "Mack" Peedin, Linwood Hobbs, Donald Beckett, Thomas Hogg, and Jerry Simmons. The squadron continues to meet at the Johnston County Airport every Tuesday from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

The squadron was founded by a group of pilots who formed the nucleus of the squadron. They recruited cadets, and the squadron grew rapidly as a great deal of enthusiasm was generated throughout the community.

The squadron was originally the Johnston County Composite Squadron and later transitioned to a cadet squadron in the mid 1990s. The squadron is now home to 28 dedicated senior members and cadets.

Since its origination, the squadron has taken part in countless activities, both with CAP and the community. Below are just a few of the ways the Johnston County Cadet Squadron has been involved with its community.

• Hosted the CAP Annual Ground Team School since 2002.
• Participates in generating community interest at the annual Johnston County Airport Open House
• Supports the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Air Show in nearby Goldsboro, N.C.
• Participated in supporting the Hospice Balloon Fest in Burlington, N.C.
• Supported and participated in the CAP North Carolina Wing Cadet Conference
• Supports the Special Olympics
• Provided color guards for numerous Christmas parades in Smithfield, N.C.
• Supported the Middle East Region SAR College
